Tech Startups Finds a Friend in Fenwick and West law firm

Silicon Valley’s top counsel is Gordon “Gordy” Davidson.

In a legal career that has spanned nearly 40 years, the lawyer has helped in raising venture capital for Cisco, as well as guided eBay and Intuit through their initial public offerings. He has also helped with the $17 billion acquisition of Network Solutions by VeriSign in 2000 in an agreement which is dubbed as the largest Internet deal ever.

Over the years, Gordon has also seen wave after wave of technology come and go.

At present, the law firm of Gordon, Fenwick & West, is riding today’s most successful trend, social networks and online media, like no other firm in the Valley.

Davidson, who became chairman of the law firm in 1995, said, “Silicon Valley came out of a recession faster than the rest of the country, and we saw it coming a little bit sooner than our peers.” He also added, “Financially, times are very good.”

According to Larry Kramer, Stanford Law School dean, Fenwick “is one of the great indigenous firms of Silicon Valley. It understands how the valley works better than most, everything from how to raise money, and where to incorporate, and how to nurture and grow a startup.”

In contrast to their bigger local rivals like Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati and Cooley, Fenwick & West puts their focus on startups.

The firm’s clients are some of Internet’s biggest names like Twitter, Facebook, as well as rising stars like the home-rental site Airbnb and Dropbox, a cloud-storage company.

In fact, a person who is familiar with the activities of the law firm, has revealed that Fenwick will most likely help Facebook go through the IPO process. This could actually happen early next year.
